PurePoint Golf Instruction Golf Swing Lesson Full Swing Alignment

How many of you are convinced that you are hitting it offline because of the club face not being square at impact? Maybe you're hooking it or maybe you're slicing it.

I want to give you a little golf swing lesson that I think will help you a lot.

Grip the golf club like you normally would, and put it on the ground. Now raise it up in the air and make half a golf swing, or really, all the way back, and then stop.

Now, look at that club face. That club face should be perfectly square.

Now, heres a golf swing lesson in case you grip it off to the right a little bit. Alright. Now, maybe youre hooking the ball, but youre not paying attention to your grip.

Now that club face is closed, and that right there would tell me that you need to change your grip. Maybe youre slicing the ball and not paying close attention to my grip.

Okay, the club face is open. Then I would put it on the ground and turn it a little bit until its square.

And if its too far over to the right, put it on the ground and move your grip to the left.

This controls the face. Ninety percent of the time thats the reason the face isnt square.

So, if you're convinced that you're slicing and hooking and it has to do with the grip, the golf swing lesson is that all you have to do is hold the club in the air and take a little half-practice swing and see if the face comes back square.

Now, let me tell you what role the head plays because I have a golf instruction tip that is equally as important. You should not keep your head down throughout the entire swing. That would be just as wrong as if you were lifting your head up in the downswing.

So, theres a very fine combination of what the head should do. So, here we go.

As the golf club swings back, the head hasnt moved at all and your eyes are on the back of the golf ball. Now, in the downswing, as the arms unwind and the left hip starts to get out of the way, the golf clubs going to swing to the bottom of the hip.

At that point, the speed of the right arm is going to start to pull you around.

So, the speed of the arms and hands are what pull you up and around. So, you can keep your head down as long as you like without forcing it down, and then the speed of the arms and hands coming past the golf ball turn you and pull you through.

So, here is the golf instruction tip again, keep your eye on the back of the ball, swing your arms up and down, and let the speed of the arms turn your head as you turn through.

Smallville (Season 2) DVD Review

Leaping onto the television landscape in Fall 2001, Smallville follows the exploits of a young Clark Kent in the years leading up to his emergence as the beloved Superman. Following a slew of TV renditions of the character's life since the comic book first appeared, Smallville sets itself apart by focusing on the lesser discussed niche of Clark's earliest developmental days. Superb casting and consistent writing have combined to make Smallville one of the more popular shows on television (especially in international markets), making the show one of the WB network's most successful creations to date

Tom Welling stars in the imminent role of teenager Clark Kent, a refugee from the dying planet of Krypton. His ship having landed in the rural American town of Smallville, Clark is raised by locals Martha (Annette O'Toole) and Jonathan Kent (John Schneider - of Dukes of Hazzard fame) as their own son. Unlike some of the film and TV spin-offs, Smallville attributes powers to other individuals in the area as a result of some of the debris associated with Krypton's destruction. As a result, Clark is forced to keep his own powers a secret while battling against other individuals who are more powerful than traditional human criminal elements. The show also provides a glimpse into the early friendship experienced between Clark and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) as well as Clark's romance with two high school classmates, Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) and Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk). Part sci-fi fantasy and part teenage soap, Smallville is an instant television classic

The Smallville (Season 2) DVD offers a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere "Vortex" in which Clark rescues Lana from certain death while Jonathan is buried alive with a obnoxious journalist (who's uncovered the story of Clark's secret powers). Meanwhile, Lex Luthor struggles with his own personal guilt while at the bedside of his critically injured father Other notable episodes from Season 2 include "Red" in which Clark first comes into contact with the dreaded "red kryptonite," prompting a change in his personality and demeanor, and "Rush" in which the entire student body of Clark's high school becomes infected with a "bug" that causes them to participate in outrageously dangerous behavior

WCAG 2.0: The New W3C Web Accessibility Guidelines Evaluated

The second version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is in final working draft and will soon be officially released. Version 1 of the guidelines ( http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10/full-checklist.html ) came under much criticism for being vague, full of jargon and extremely difficult to use. The W3C has been working on version 2.0 of the guidelines ( http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/appendixB.html ) for over 5 years now, but has it been worth the wait?

What's good about WCAG 2.0?

There have certainly been a number of improvements made to the new guidelines. This is of course to be expected - after 5 years you would expect some improvement! Some of these improvements include:

1. Outdated guidelines removed

A number of guidelines from WCAG 1.0 are well out-of-date. Unfortunately, web developers still implement these out-dated guidelines because they don't know otherwise. Rather than go on an accessibility training course and learn 'real-world' accessibility, many web developers and manager tick boxes against guidelines.

Some of the out-of-date WCAG 1.0 guidelines, which have been removed from WCAG 2.0 include:

* 1.5 - Provide equivilent text links for links within client-side image maps
* 5.6 - Provide abbreviations for table header labels, if you use these
* 9.5 - Use accesskeys (keyboard shortcuts) for important links
* 10.3 - Don't use tables with more than one column for layout
* 10.4 - Make sure form fields aren't empty by default
* 10.5 - Ensure different links have non-link text between them

(Please note, the above isn't the exact wording of the guidelines - each of the original guidelines has been translated from the official W3C guideline into more easy-to-understand language.)

The above guidelines have all been removed from WCAG 2.0, so shouldn't be adhered to.

2. Good real world techniques provided

The document, Techniques for WCAG 2.0 ( http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/WD-WCAG20-TECHS-20060427/Overview.html )replaces the previous techniques document, and is actually much better. It provides a list of common failures, which the previous version didn't, and actually offers some excellent examples of common errors.

The other major improvement in this techniques document is that the examples provided are far more real-world. The WCAG 1.0 techniques document used text such as PortMaster 3 with ComOS 3.7.1 in their examples, but who has any idea what this means? The new document is far better in this respect, using examples such as phone numbers and calendars, for example.

The techniques document also provides some clever recommendations, which accessibility guideline box-ticking developers wouldn't perhaps have thought have. For example:

* How to open a link in a new window using unobtrusive JavaScript
* Displaying decorative images through CSS
* Combining text and its adjacent image image in the same link
* Providing a heading at the beginning of each section on the page

..And many more! Do have a good look at the WCAG 2.0 techniques document as there's lots of useful guidance here using quite easy-to-understand examples.

3. New guidelines included

A number of new guidelines have been brought into WCAG 2.0. Some of these guidelines are totally new whereas others were hinted at, but not specifically stated, in WCAG 1.0. Some examples include:

* Providing text-based error messages for forms
* Ensure all pages have a descriptive title
* Background noise can be turned off

What's not good about WCAG 2.0?

So there certainly have been some improvements made to the W3C accessibility guidelines. But is it all good news? Have the problems associated with WCAG 1.0 been eliminated for this version 2 of the guidelines? Well not quite, as there are still a number of problems...

1. Verbose and jargon-filled language

One of the main criticisms aimed at WCAG 1.0 was the complexity of the language used. Have things improved? Hardly! Pretty much every paragraph is littered with jargon that the average web developer or web manager would be left with no clue as to the meaning.

Clearly aware of the level of jargon, the W3C have made complex terms green underlined links, linking to definitions. This is all well and good in theory, but when most sentences are broken up with one or two links it makes reading these sentences quite difficult.

Even worse though, is that the definitions are just as jargon-filled and difficult to understand as the term being defined! For example:

* Authored unit - Set of material created as a single body by an author
* Programmatically determined - Determined by software from data provided in a user-agent-supported manner such that the user agents can extract and present this information to users in different modalities
* Specific sensory experience - A sensory experience that is not purely decorative and does not primarily convey important information or perform a function
* Web unit - A collection of information, consisting of one or more resources, intended to be rendered together, and identified by a single Uniform Resource Identifier (such as URLs)

Ironically, there's even a definition provided for the word 'jargon'!

Furthermore, it seems that some jargon used in WCAG 1.0, which webmasters have gotten used to, has been replaced with equally incomprehensible words. For example, we no longer have Priority 1, 2 and 3 to aim for - instead we now have success criteria level 1, 2 and 3.

2. Awful usability

Another major criticism of the WCAG 1.0 guidelines was how difficult it is to find specific guidance and answers. It doesn't take too long to discover that the WCAG 2.0 guidelines quite clearly offer the same low level of usability.

Reasons for this poor usability include:

* The level of jargon and complexity of language is truly phenomenal (as outlined above)
* The text is littered with links making it very difficult to read
* The two main documents, Understanding WCAG 2.0 ( http://www.w3.org/TR/UNDERSTANDING-WCAG20/ ) and Techniques for WCAG 2.0 ( http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/WD-WCAG20-TECHS-20060427/Overview.html ) are 164 and 363 pages long in total (when doing a print preview)

If only the W3C carried out basic usability testing of how people actually use (or are unable to use) these guidelines! What they'd undoubtedly find is that users won't understand most guidelines and will end up blindly clicking links to find out how to meet these guidelines.

As with WCAG 1.0, clicking on most links from the WCAG 2.0 guidelines simply takes users into the middle of massive pages full of difficult-to-understand text. The text, of course, is densely littered with links. Users will probably click on a link again in the desperate hope that they'll somehow find some text that clearly and succinctly explains what they need to do. They'll usually be disappointed.

Organising the massive amount of content available is certainly not an easy task - but why not, as a start, split up these massive documents into more manageable and less intimidating sets of smaller documents? Then, carry out some usability testing, refine, and test again.

3. Useful guidelines gone

Although there are a number of useful, new guidelines in WCAG 2.0, a number of important guidelines from WCAG 1.0 have been removed or are only vaguely referred to. These include, but aren't limited to:

* 3.1 - Avoid embedding text within images.
* 3.2 - Create documents that validate.
* 3.3 - Use CSS and not tables for layout.
* 3.4 - Ensure text is resizable.
* 12.3 - Divide large blocks of information into more manageable groups where natural and appropriate.
* 13.8 - Place distinguishing information at the beginning of headings, paragraphs, lists, etc.
* 14.1 - Use clear and simple language.

Particularly worrying is the removal of the final three guidelines, all of which relate to the accessibility of content. A major part of any website's accessibility, and one that's often overlooked, is the site's usability and how the content is written and structured.

Accessible content is crucial for all special needs users, particularly those with learning difficulties and dyslexia. Perhaps the reason these guidelines have been removed is because content guidelines are fluffier and harder to measure than technical accessibility guidelines. Whatever the reason, this is not a good step for accessibility.

4. Technology neutral and the concept of the baseline

WCAG 1.0 states quite clearly that alternatives to JavaScript, PDFs and Flash must all be provided, as assistive technologies such as screen readers can't access these. Although this was generally true in 1999, it's not the case now, and nowadays JavaScript, PDFs and Flash can all be made accessible to most assistive technologies. (Remember, 'can be' is not the same as 'are'.)

Version 1 of the accessibility guidelines became quite outdated rather quickly. To prevent this from happening to version 2 of the accessibility guidelines, the W3C have attempted to make WCAG 2.0 technology-neutral. Sounds sensible as now the guidelines won't become outdated so quickly, right?

In practice, what this means is that the WCAG 2.0 guidelines are extremely vague. So vague, in fact, that they're almost unusable as they talk in such generic terms.

Additionally, the concept of the baseline has now been introduced, where by webmasters can claim which technologies they assume are supported by site visitors' browsers. So, if you build a website entirely in Flash and say that Flash is part of your baseline, your website can conform with all the guidelines despite the fact that some people won't be able to access your site at all!

Discussion

So, was the wait worth it? We've waited over 5 years for WCAG 2.0 and certainly a number of improvements have been made. Worryingly though, the guidelines continue to be very difficult to actually use, further discouraging webmasters from reading them. The extra vagueness of these new guidelines certainly doesn't help either.

The W3C just doesn't seem to get it: People don't generally want to read through hundreds of pages of text to find out how to implement accessible solutions - they just want answers and specific guidance. For most people, accessibility is just one small part of their job and they don't have time for all this.

Webmasters are also now being asked to choose a baseline for their website but how do they even begin to go about doing this!? How would you as a web developer explain the concept of a baseline to senior management? How do you decide what you should do so as to comply with any legal requirements? Unfortunately there's no correct answer to either of these questions.

Solution?

A solution could be that the W3C simply provides specific guidelines for what web developers and managers actually have to do. Much of this information is already there on their website, but it's hidden away in the enormous and intimidating Techniques for WCAG 2.0 document. This document could be broken down into manageable chunks, added to and refined, and focus on providing specific, real world guidelines.

Guidelines should be relevant and specific to today's technology, but would be updated on an on-going basis so as to make sure they don't become too dated. Why did we have to wait over five years for version 2.0? Why couldn't we have received versions 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on during this time? This would surely have prevented WCAG 1.0 becoming out-dated as quickly as it did?

Most importantly though, the whole WCAG 2.0 section on the W3C website needs to have usability testing carried out on it. The benefits of usability testing are pretty well known by now, and it's quite clear that the W3C has very little idea how real users are interacting with the website. By carrying out ongoing usability testing, the W3C can learn about its users and ultimately aim for an easy-to-understand and intuitive website.

Opening Acts!...Does Playing Before A Rock Star Make You One?

Its the dream of many a musician to open up for either: their favorite band or the favorite band of their childhood. For many, the ultimate in true rock star status is to share a stage with the musicians who made you want to play music in the first placeto see you name in lights (or printed on a flyer, as the case may be) with the guys (or gals) whose music you listen to almost as much as (if not more than) your own.

But is it really a good idea, as an unsigned artist, to open up for an act already known to the general public? Will you get anywhere near the recognition opening up for Pearl Jam in a large venue that you would at a local club playing with other unsigned bands? Will you fans dig your music as hard as ever or will they forget all about you in a mad frenzy to have Eddie Vedder sign their backs?

Its a double-edged sword that many artists forget to think over carefully before rushing starry-eyed into the excitement of being the opening act for: (Insert Name Of Famous Rock Star Here). In many cases, venues and promoters still expect your crowd to turn out and drink it up at shows, even though the headliner will draw a big crowd of their own. Many of these shows are an hour plus away from your local area and tickets can be upwards of $100. Is that something you can expect your friends will be up for?

And then theres the issue of press. Do you dare ask a reviewer to come out and cover your show and expect that a large portion of your article wont be about how Pearl Jam rocks! You score local radio play only to have the DJ announce the show and play, Alive. Sometimes opening up for a signed act can make an unsigned artist feel even more invisible than usual.

The following are a few tips that may help you to weigh the pros and cons of grabbing a spot as the opening act for a famous band:

1.) Would You Take The Show If You Werent Playing With Pearl Jam?---Many artists think that playing with a famous act is so important that they dont even bother to check out anything else about the gig. Many assume that rock stars always command rock star stages, but this is often not the case. Many acts, especially classic rock/retro acts on revival tours, are looking to get out and play anywhere that will put them up the right kind of front money. Often times this means that the venues are in more remote areas either looking to get on the musical map or using a well-known act to entice people to drive in from far away. Sometimes, the clubs are older rooms looking to get their groove back or new places that havent yet acquired a regular crowd. Before booking anything, drive out and check out the venue on a few different nights and make sure that you like the room, the stage, the regulars, the area, etc. and ask yourselves if this is a venue that would play if it was!

2.) Would Pearl Jams Fans Listen To You If They Caught You In Your Local Bar?---For a lot of upcoming acts, the lure of playing in front of a crowd of adoring fans is a huge plus. But, you need to make sure to remember that just because people are coming to a club doesnt mean they plan to listen to you. Sadly, often the followers of signed acts could care less about unknown openers and will arrive right before the headliners set. Sometimes, they sit in at the bar in another room praising their favorite band while the openers play to their friends and the wall. Worst case, many of them will rush the stage yelling, Pearl Jam! We want Pearl Jam while you do your best to win them over musically. This is why its important to only open for signed acts that fit in the style of your music. If you loved Pearl Jam in high school but your band sounds like John Mayer, you might want to think twice before deciding that their fans are automatically going to dig your tunes.

3.) Find Out All Of The Details Before Committing To A Signed Act Show---Its fairly easy to book a local show: two to five unsigned acts, 20-45 minute sets, all ages to 21 and up, $0 to $10 cover, sound check or line check, maybe free parking, possibly some free drinks, sometimes backline gear, occasionally free food, and pray for a decent sound man. Its all pretty much cut and dried and if your band has been around awhile, you can confirm gigs in your sleep. Signed headlining acts are a whole different animal and promising your crowd to a venue two hours away, with a $40 cover charge where your band is playing a 15 minute set with your gear scrunched up on the front of the stage so that the headliners gear can remain set up might not be as easy as you think. Your fans are used to seeing you rock the house, down the street from their homes, where you play long, get an encore and the house buys everyone a shot! Unless theyre dying to see Pearl Jam, they might not be u!

p for all of extra energy it takes to see you open up for a famous act.

4.) You May Not Be Signed But You Can Act Like You Are---If you decide to take a gig opening up for a signed band and you want to impress them, their crew, their reps, and the clubs management, then make sure youre act as professional as your headliner. Get there early, have your gear organized, make sure everything is working perfectly, load in at the speed of light, have your set list ready, be courteous to the sound guy (gal), keep your set on time, and load off at the speed of light. Most importantly, have your merchandise in order and professionally displayed at the club/arena: CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, bumper stickers, hats, condoms, thongsyou name it. You know youre unsigned but the headliners fans dont, so why advertise it? Put on a fantastic show and maybe youll sell some CDs, etc. and make some extra cash.

Theres one more thing to consider here: fulfilling a dream. If its your dream to open up for an act you love, then throw caution to the wind and do it just for the dream. If you lose money, hate the club, get booed by over-zealous fanswho cares? For that one set, you shared the stage with the band that put the dream in your heart to get up on a stage in the first place. Plus, its great bragging rights for your band. You can throw it up on your website and talk about it to your grandchildren. If you dont mind the extra effort, commitment and sometimes hassle, then go for it! Who knows? Maybe theyll pick you up as the opener on their tour? Maybe their label will see you and sign you? Maybe Rolling Stone will come out to review them and mention your name? If youre doing it to fulfill the dream, then everything else is a bonus. Just remember to get all of the details, and stay smart when undertaking a huge gig. Now, get up on that stage and wow that big crowd,!

South Park (Season 4) DVD Review

Premiering in the late summer of 1997, South Park took American pop culture by storm with its no-holds-barred examination of social and political issues and its lewd yet unique brand of cartoon humor. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park is the lynchpin of cable network Comedy Central's original programming lineup. Centered around the lives of several kids in the small Colorado town of South Park (a place prone to odd and paranormal occurrences), the series presents itself in the form of crude animated drawings, yet the concept works, playing home to innumerable well-written shows filled with boundless wit, well-timed one-liners, and an endless array of politically-incorrect humor. Love it or hate it, South Park is a truly original animated series with relentlessly off-the-wall plot twists and comic relief. If you love oddball humor, then this is the show for you

South Park mostly follows the exploits of four elementary school kids - Cartman (who's overweight and sarcastic), Kyle (who dreams of eliminating his little brother Ike), Stan (who throws up at the sight of a girl he likes), and Kenny (who manages to get killed in every episode). All four attend South Park Elementary School where third grade teacher Mr. Garrison educates them with the use of a hand-puppet named "Mr. Hat" and cafeteria employee "Chef" McElroy (Isaac Hayes) dispenses his advice while periodically breaking into 70's love songs about making love to women. South Park is the setting for numerous oddities such as alien visitors, a monster with a hand of celery and the leg of Patrick Duffy, and Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride. South Park also hosts a number famous people from time to time, such as the Devil, Saddam Hussein, the Antichrist, Kathy Lee Gifford, Scott Baio, Tina Yothers, Elton John, and Jesus Christ - who has his own cable access show

The South Park (Season 4) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere "The Tooth Fairy's TATS 2000" in which Cartman's two-dollar bounty from the tooth fairy sparks an idea in the boys' heads to scam the tooth fairy. When they learn the truth about the tooth fairy, they establish a new plan to rob rich kids of their tooth fairy money, but they soon learn that a notorious mobster already has the tooth fairy market cornered Other notable episodes from Season 4 include "Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?" in which a fundamentalist preacher convinces the boys that they are all going to hell unless they confess their sins (except for Kyle because he's Jewish, and thus, hell-bound already), and "Fat Camp" in which the boys dissect several endangered manatees in science class following a delivery mix-up with the Denver Zoo

Most Russians of adult age were raised under the Soviet educational system. My wife has described much of it to me. When it comes to daydreaming, talking in class, tardiness, and homework excuses, there really were not many differences between Russia and America.

Russian students addressed the teacher in the Russian Patronymic, rather than Mister and the last name. In Russia, your middle name is a patronymic of your fathers name. If you are a boy, the patronymic would be your fathers name with ovich at the end.

If you are a girl, the patronymic would be your fathers name with ovna at the end.

My wifes name is Aksana. Her fathers name is Vadim. Her name is therefore Aksana Vadimovna. My patronymic is John Donaldovich. Pretty simple.

Essentially it identifies her as Vadims daughter, Aksana, and me as Donalds son, John.

LPG Car Performance Issues

It is believed by many car owners and consumers that if they decide to convert their car to run on LPG fuel this will lower the cars performance this is untrue and in fact if there is any change in performance it will be negligible and most drivers would be unlikely to detect the difference.

If car owners decide to convert their vehicles to run on LPG they will find that power outputs from their cars engine will be slightly reduced than when the car is running on petrol. Coping With Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury is one of the most devastating of all traumatic injuries. Spinal injury can lead to partial or even complete paralysis. In partial paralysis, there is at least some movement and sensation on the affected areas. It is worse if your injury results in total paralysis of the injured areas like the loss of use of your legs or arms.

Regardless of whether you contributed to the accident or is totally innocent and purely a victim of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, it doesnt change the fact that spinal cord injuries have lasting effect. In other cases the effect of spinal cord injury is permanent.

If you are unfortunate enough to have figured in an accident and your spinal cord was seriously injured causing paralysis, you will likely experience not only physical pain but also emotional trauma and grief.

The problem with the effects of spinal cord injury is double edged. While you need to get treatments and rehabilitation of the paralyzed areas of your body, you also need to take care of the emotional and psychological side of the spinal cord injury.

In complete paralysis, there are experiments to try and treat the injured spinal cord but the reality of the moment is that completely paralyzed parts of the body due to serious spinal cord injury almost always stays immobile and without sensation.

While trying to make do with current rehab techniques, adjustment to the new condition of the person paralyzed is of equal or even more importance. Having lost the use of parts of your body is really devastating. It is a difficult challenge for those paralyzed to adjust to the new environment and lifestyle.

There is however, no step by step process in getting over disbelief, grief, sadness and anger brought about by the realization of paralysis.

The first step in adjusting to the new condition is acceptance. Accept the fact that you will never again get to utilized parts of your body. After acceptance comes understanding of the condition. With understanding comes the realization that the person needs to cope and try to find new ways of doing things and dealing with the daily challenges of everyday life.

The most important thing however, in order for a paralyzed person to adjust, is the help and understanding of the family members. So long as the paralyzed person has a support system as strong as the family, the daily trials of the paralyzed person becomes more bearable. If you have a family member who has spinal cord injury always remember to encourage that family member. Positive reinforcements, especially from love ones, are stronger than any expensive therapy sessions out there.

The HD Media future

Everyone knows that media format wars have historical significance in the world of technology. Remember the most notorious battle between the Beta max and the VHS? The winner of such battles will make millions even billions. Later we had the upgrade of tape to CD, a revolution in music. In 1980 the Philips/Sony compact disc standard was finalized and nobody has looked back for the last 26 years (until mp3's came along).

Well as ever there is a new media battle but who will win again is yet unknown. This modern forest of technological mass has produced a new insurgency: THE HIGH DEFINITION WAR. Blu-ray vs HD-DVD are two competing formats which are eventually going to replace DVD's. As you look around at your local electric retailers you can see changes happening in the broadcast world, not only are we changing from our conventional CRT screens to Flat screen but also to HD ready TV. The impact this has on our lives is not as large as black and white to colour, but nevertheless a change that will definitely be a benchmark for future media.

Why New formats?

The reason we have introduced these new formats is that your traditional DVD can hold a maximum of 9.4 GB (Dual Layer) of information. This is not enough for HD broadcast as the information required is higher, being a resolution of 1920x1080. Blu-ray discs can hold 50 GB (Dual Layer) and HD-DVD 30 GB (Dual Layer).

These new discs cannot be played on normal DVD players but on new HD media players of which examples are Samsung BDP 1000 (Blu-Ray), Sony Playstation 3 (Blu-Ray), Toshiba HDXA1 (HD-DVD). This means spending more money for better resolution.

Price

This is always important especially when new models of media come out; at first it is always expensive as supply out strips demand. The players are expensive, the cheapest being the Playstation 3 supposedly retailing at 549. Blu-Ray media also being expensive; similar to DVD's when they first came out (taking inflation into consideration), blank media costing from 11.99 to 24.99.

To play a Blu-ray Disc on a PC has brought about a price concern. The fact that you have to purchase a HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) Graphic card, along with a HD monitor, not to mention a Blu-ray Drive and media, controversially may bring about decrease in sales. Software and Hardware companies have invested a lot of money in subsidising HD media. Samsung, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, LG, Sony, TDK, JVC and Sharp support Blu-ray and Toshiba and Microsoft back HD-DVD. Hollywood movie studios Disney, Paramount, Warner, Sony, Eagle rock, Fox and MGM and Lions gate support Blu-ray also. None of these large companies would take such a gamble if they didn't know that this is what the consumer wants.

PlayStation 3

Sony love to bring out their own media whether its Sony Duo Sticks or Sony Mini Discs. Their hunger to dominate the consumer market has always been there and this is nothing different. The Playstation 3 will play Blu-Ray discs, still having the ability to play older media like DVDs and CDs. The success of the predecessor's PS1 and PS2 will give much anticipation to the release of this new console and is what Sony are hoping will convert people to use Blu-Ray. A Sony spokesman has predicted that Blu-Ray will dominate the HD market within 12 months.

The encouraging feature with HD-DVD is the name, everyone's ears will ring with the name and automatically assume that this is a high definition movie. Asking someone in the street what 'Blu-ray' is will bring looks of confusion, along with the fact that both will produce similar quality pictures.

Region Coding

Region coding with Blu-Ray may put people off; the fact that you may not be able to watch a new release from the states or Japan on your European locked regional player will raise eyebrows.

REGION 1 South America, North America, East Asia (except China)
REGION 2 Europe and Africa
REGION 3 China, Russia other Countries

Multiregional configurations on DVD players has encouraged sales worldwide especially with worldwide films from Bollywood, Japan (manga) and South America.

So far the HD-DVD camp has not announced region coding just yet, and if they don't then this will be very advantageous for consumers.

Future Proof

Realistically you only need about 15-20 GB for a feature length film in High definition but who would have known that DVD's could not be able to hold enough for high definition. Theoretically they can with MPEG-4 Compression. In any case media like Blu-ray will hopefully be future proof in years to come.

Conclusion

The timescale and price are the two main issues here, how quick we will universally change to HD and whether this is affordable. From a consumer point of view the necessity for HD doesn't seem imperative, after all VHS was around for 20 odd years twice that of DVD (so far). You could argue that technology is changing exponentially and that changes occur quicker.

As for the battle between the two media there may be compromise ahead. A UK firm has announced a solution to the media war. London-based New Medium Enterprises (NME) has developed a low-cost, multilayer DVD disc that can store Blu-ray content on one layer and HD DVD content on another. This would leave the consumer with the choice of buying either type of player to play the one disc.

The key setback I feel with the looming HD change is the cheaper alternative to a Blu-Ray player or HD-DVD player, the DVD upscaler. Do people want to get rid of those hundreds of DVDs they bought to replace them with an expensive alternative, especially when they might not even notice the difference in picture quality?

However I do feel that HD is encouraged with consoles such as the Playstation 3. Blu-ray is its main format and may revolutionise the games industry.

The Importance of Research for Effective Copywriting

Most people who write for a living will tell you getting it right takes about 10% actual writing time and 90% research. Knowing what to write before you write it, and to whom, might sound like an obvious place to start, but when you're under pressure to meet a business writing deadline, the obvious can go out of the window. It shouldn't though, because even when you're up against the clock, the whole process of writing your content will become easier if you put the pen down, sit back from the keyboard, and consider it first.

"An important first task when you are planning a piece of written work is to think carefully about its purpose." (1). Start by identifying your reader, bearing in mind these three simple questions:

* Who is my reader? * Will they read this? * What value is being created? (2)

If, for example, your brief is to write a 1000 word business to consumer' brochure on a new range of motorized mobility scooters the language, tone and style of your piece should not be targeted towards the youth audience. Sounds too obvious? Look in any newspaper, magazine or at any website, and you'll soon find countless examples of advertisements for products that seem to be incongruously addressing a completely irrelevant market. This accounts for the irritation or amusement you feel when viewing a TV advert not aimed at you. When this happens, the audience feels disconnected straight away, and the intended message of the content falls between the cracks. It's one of the biggest reasons sales copy and adverts fail.

In our example, after you've identified your main mobility scooter' readership as senior citizens, you then have a very compelling reason why they will want to read about your new products. But it's a competitive market and the scooters won't sell themselves. So the next part of the process is to ask yourself, What's in it for my intended readers what benefits will our products give these readers over and above those of our competitors and how do I communicate this to them in a language they will appreciate?'

Consider benefits, not just features

This is when the analysis' stage of the research process kicks in when you go back to your product and set out all the features it offers your target reader, listing the corresponding benefits. Think about everything your product can do, and how this will help the reader how this will create value for them within the content you are about to write.

If at this stage you need to clarify certain product features or specifications, or identify more generalized subject matter that reinforces your point go onto the Internet and Google your key topics, read up on relevant details that will put your claims into an authoritative context. Imagine yourself in the mindset of your target reader, and search for examples of similar products directed at them. Note the language used to talk to them, and consider what works and what doesn't in terms of tone.

The more detailed your research at this stage, the more rounded and effective your writing will be. You might think you're collecting superfluous details, but when it comes to actually writing your content, you'll find you're already a mini expert' on the subject, and can cherry pick the best facts, stats and juicy pieces of information to back up your message.

The final stage of your research should take the form of collating your rough notes into a definitive structure. This structure will depend on the media in which your content will be published - for example, writing for the Web is very different than writing a sales letter or brochure but if your research is sound you'll put yourself on a solid footing for actually structuring and writing effective content.

A Tale of Two Putters- Isao Aoki vs. Nick Price

Putting represents nearly half of all the strokes you take during a round of golf. So it's not surprising to find players looking to sharpen their putting skills whenever they can or trying tips things to be successful. The better putter you are, the lower your golf handicap, as I tell golfers who take my golf lesions.

Because of its bearing on your golf handicap, putting has caused more inventiveness in search of perfection than anything in the game. Players have all sorts of styles and movements, all unique to the individual. Despite these innovative efforts, one thing remains true: there's no substitute for a sound putting stroke.

Below we describe the putting technique of two professional golfers-Isao Aoki and Nick Price. They've adopted different putting styles, yet both are considered excellent putters.

The Setup

Japan's Isao Aoki posses a superb putting stroke locked into a strange and individual style. Nevertheless, he is renowned putter. In fact, putting is probably the best part of his game. Aoki addresses the ball with the top of his putter high in the air. His hands are low and he crouches over significantly.

Nick Price' style, on the other hand, is more classic. His technique is based on a locked left wrist and a shoulder-dominated stroke. At address, he keeps his shoulders square to the intended line, and his hands over or just ahead of the ball. He crouches slightly over the ball, but not nearly as much as Aoki.

Despite the differences in style, both players do one thing all great putters do at address-they keep their eyes directly over the ball. It's the most important ingredient in the setup, irrespective of a person's height, build, or style. Keeping you're eyes directly over the ball and turning your head allows a direct view down the line to the hole, without any need to move the shoulders out of alignment.

The Stroke

Aoki is a touch putter, so he uses his hands more than his shoulders, and takes the club back steeply, with the right hand controlling the takeaway. At the top of the backswing, his putter is high off the ground-an unusual position for a good putter. Nevertheless, it works well for Aoki. His stroke is smooth and rhythmical.

Price's technique is based on a shoulder-dominated stroke. His arms, shoulders, and putter move away from the ball as a single unit, with the hands remaining passive. He keeps his wrist firm during the stroke. And he strikes on the upstroke. Price uses more of a pendulum motion than Aoki, swinging the putter smoothly and rhythmically back and forth.

Making a smooth, flowing stroke is not a problem for most players, witness the golfers who take golf lessons from me. Many have nice fluid strokes. The problem arises when a ball is introduced. The ball for whatever reason hampers the putt. A good drill to help eliminate this problem is to start by taking a normal practice stroke. Then address the ball, close your eyes, and repeat the stroke-letting the ball get in the way. The drill makes the real stroke more like the practice one.

The Follow-Through

During the follow-through, Aoki brings the head of the putter back into a square position at impact. His head remains perfectly still throughout the stroke. Aoki remains virtually motionless afterwards, careful that the slightest movement doesn't affect his putt. His head stays still except to follow the ball well after the stroke.

Price keeps his left wrist locked in position through the hitting zone and into the follow- through. He accelerates the putter-head through impact and makes sure his follow- through is as long as his backswing. He, too, keeps his head as steady as possible through the stroke. And he keeps his eyes fixed on the spot where the ball was well after the stroke.

Despite their different styles, both players remain practically motionless after the putt is made. It is imperative to making a good putt. Lifting your head too soon when putting can throw off your putt. The Show Me The Money Drill we covered in last week's golf tips is great for this flaw.

The Show Me the Money drill works for three reasons. It forces you to keep your eyes steady, helping to stabilize your whole body. It prevents you from lifting out of your stance prematurely. And because you're focused on the coin and not the ball, it inclines you to make a nice clean stroke through the ball.

Conclusion

If you want to lower your golf handicap, you need to improve your putting. Nearly half of the strokes made during a full round of golf are putts. Cutting down on your putts will lower your scores and golf handicap. Of course, not everyone will have the same putting style. But one thing remains true: there's no substitute for a sound putting stroke-irrespective of how it looks.

How Pictures Appear on Web Pages

: Did you know that when you see a picture on a web page, the actual picture might not actually be residing on the website you are viewing, but might be residing on a website on the other side of the world?

You all know that the web page you are viewing is generated by your browser from the HTML code that it received when you told it to load this page. If you are using Internet Explorer to read this article, position your cursor in the middle of the page away from any table or graphic and right click your mouse. On the drop down box, click View Source. Notepad will open a window that will display the HTML code for the page that you are viewing.

If you do this on a page with a picture or graphic, you will not see the picture or graphic embedded in the HTML, but rather in its place, you will see some HTML code that says this:

Authors note: If you see the HTML tags xmp and /xmp these are added in this article to tell the browser not to consider what is between them as executable HTML, but rather, print it as text.

img src= is the HTML tag that tells the browser where the file is located that contains the image. The numbers after it are the size of the picture in pixels on the screen.

Isnt this technology great? You can post a picture on any website on the Net and you can load it into the page of any another website. The amazing thing is that all this is done in the time it takes for the browser to load and format the page. This is why sometimes you see the page text load first and the pictures loads a little slower. Also, if you see a blank picture frame with a small red X in it, this means that the link to the picture is broken or the website host is down and the picture cannot not be accessed.

Now that he's older, and we're able to get a better quality alarm (the Malem Ultimate I), we're up for the challenge again.

Overall, I think there's a lot of potential. I've heard from other moms who've had great success with different models. Some have more bells and whistles than others (literally!), but they all have the same basic idea - when it gets wet, it wakes the bedwetter up so they can run to the bathroom.

Funny side note: when they've reported the happy results to their pediatricians, some docs have said it was just a coincidence - that the kid's bladder had simply matured by that time.

The alarm worked great for a few nights - a couple were actually dry, and another was almost dry. Then we went on vacation! Don't know about you, but everything from diet to excercise goes out the window when we're away from home. This was no exception!

Some tips:

- As always, keep your cool. Once a kid senses a power struggle, you're dead meat! Try to keep it casual. Keep your voice calm, even quieter than you normally speak.

- Find a great bribe! What really gets your child excited? Get creative about how you can create a reward for cooperation. Don't just offer something that sounds good to you - make sure it's enticing to your child.

- Praise efforts, not just results. So, if he wears the alarm - but somehow sleeps through it and soaks the bed, I'll say, "Great job on wearing the alarm! Keep it up, and it'll start really helping you stay dry."
